Project Summary:
Fishing activities are a source of various forms and types of waste that can directly or indirectly reach the sea, but can also be an important factor in its reduction.
The Adriatic Sea, due to its partially enclosed nature, the socio-economic importance of fishing, as well as the numerous fishing ports along the coast, is particularly vulnerable to pollution from fishing waste. Fishing ports are places where significant quantities of various types of waste are disposed of; in addition to marine waste, other waste is also found there, such as municipal and bulky waste, as well as waste oils, filters, batteries, oily rags and others.
The project will connect research institutions, fishing associations, fish markets and port authorities, state administration bodies, local self-government and non-governmental organizations from Italy and Croatia with the goals of comprehensive monitoring of waste collected during fishing activities and that generated in fishing ports, replacing plastic in fishing vessels and ports with ecologically compatible reusable materials, implementing a circular model of waste management, conducting a wide communication and information dissemination campaign on the importance of proper waste management and providing advice on strategic management and policy on these issues.
